![]() | Penny Herbert is a third generation artist who spent her early life in England. Her early artistic training was at home with her father, a studio-trained amateur painter, and her mother, active in textile arts. Penny also had some formal training in Chinese painting from Nancy Kuo. After obtaining a Ph.D. in Chinese Studies at Cambridge University, Penny migrated to Australia to pursue an academic career. She has painted full time since 2003. She works mainly in watercolour and also paints silk scarves and crafts other wearable items. Penny's artistic vision is informed by training in western watercolour painting and by many years of life and study in East Asia. From Chinese and Japanese philosophy, she draws the concept of art as meditation on the life force shared by nature and artist. In Australia, Penny has found the space and tranquillity in which to develop her practice to include other media and wearable art. She is one of a group of artists who are students of Leonie Dobrowolski and also exhibits regularly with the West Australian Society of Arts. | |
