Deborah Allen – Artist of the Month – August 2025

Deborah, throughout her high school years, had the good fortune of being a student of the remarkable Sister Rosemary Crumlin OAM (art educator, art historian, author, exhibition curator, Blake Prize judge, recipient of two honorary doctorates and noted wearer of purple boots). She enriched Deborah’s art journey with her unique take on all things art and still influences it to this day.

Deborah began her adult journey with printmaking in 2019 but it wasn’t until retirement that she was able to commit meaningful time to the pursuit. Linocut is her favoured technique but Deborah also creates works with drypoint, etching, woodcut, collagraph, monotype, screen printing and cyanotype.

Subject matter in Deborah’s work is varied but tends toward the unnoticed, under-utilised or unheralded, such as: found objects; discarded building materials; nooks and crannies; urban and industrial sites and decay.

In creating, Deborah ultimately gains reward from the process, from inspiration to completion (questions to be answered, decisions to be made, techniques to be deployed, materials and tools to be selected, problems to be resolved).
