Artist’s Biography

I’m a Design & Technology teacher and part-time sculptor. In 2010 my passion for working with wood, form and Art has taken a twist and driven me towards creating recycled wood sculptures of a unique kind, giving formerly redundant timber a new and unexpected lease of life.

Artwork is, by its very nature, a by-product of the way we think and feel. Therefore, my sculptures represent an outward expression of the blend of me. My work is an experiment in form and aesthetics. Natural materials, their honesty and the effects that time and use have on them, inspire me.

The self-taught use of power tools such as chainsaws, wood carvers, angle grinders, power file and hand tools alike allow me to explore elongated, distorted figures and shapes on dead tree logs, branches, planks or boards collected from bulk rubbish. Wood is such a versatile and beautiful medium. Contrasting aspects and combinations such as ‘heavy and light’ or ‘thick and thin’ in form, ‘rough and smooth’ in texture, ‘natural look’ or ‘added colour’ as a finish offer endless possibilities and challenges to produce unexpected solutions for my pieces.

I am a ‘creative type’; I feel truly balanced only when immersed in the creative act which I believe is an innate character trait rather than an acquired skill. I’ve always loved the experience of losing myself in thought and diving into the world of art and imagination. This creative introspection allows me to produce a niche art that is not only aesthetically beautiful but one-of-a-kind.

My aim is to create unforgettable works and impart a deep emotional connection between objects and human beings whenever I begin a new piece. As a result, most of my work conveys the synthesis between the figurative and the abstract, and the real and imaginary.
