A
Message from the President
Welcome
to the September edition of the WASA Newsletter.
The WASA Committee has been hard at work charting the next
twelve months for all members. The Committee met on the
11th August, under the specialist guidance of consultant
and artist, Alan Pickering. We created a plan
for implementation of many the observations and
recommendations from the Strategic Plan, which captured members
ideas for change.
The planning is now being complemented with more detailed
implementation projects. All members are encouraged to engage
with the Committee Representatives to join in whatever
projects they feel most inclined to assist in. These
projects now include work on social media, plein air, as Wilgie Plein Air,
attracting younger
members, reaching out to country areas, applying for grants and
finding a Hub or WASA premises.
The High Society evening on the 19th August was a roaring
success with more than 60 artists attending the night. Huge
thanks must go to the organisers, particularly Tanya Izzard and
Jane Holtfreter, who set up and arranged all the logistics for
the night. A big 'well done' to them and thank you to
everyone for coming along and making the evening so much fun.
This month members painted out at Government House Gardens and
a second event will be held on the morning of the 16th
September. The weather was not the best but a small group
painted all morning. There were some beautiful paintings
produced.
A big thank you and well done to all those who participated in
the Annual Army Art Exhibition on from 20th - 22nd
August. Steve "Millsey" Mills, the radio
personality from 6PR opened the event. There were
significant sales and approximately $10,000 will go to
charity. Thank you.
Looking forward, we have a monthly demonstration which
promises to be a real treat and something different, with
artist Catherine Scartaccini, of CS Illustrator and
her miniature art of animals. She is a superb artist and
she will provide insight into detailed and miniature
work.
Members will be exhibiting their artworks of their pets in the
monthly competition.
The Armadale Hills Open Studios event is on until 12th
September. Some WASA members are exhibiting their art
during this event.
The Plein Air Down Under Festival will be held in Mandurah from
24th - 27th of September, with workshops being offered for
artists. Get down to Mandurah for some marvellous
painting, exhibitions and prizes. WASA is sponsoring a
prize in the Non-Professional Category.
The date for the 2022 WASA Annual Exhibition has been agreed
for the weekend of the 4th - 6th March 2022. The event
over will be over three days and will be held at the Italian
Club in Fremantle.
Congratulations to Gina Galli Roberts who is member of the
month for September. Check out her wonderful art and
creativity in the WASA media.
Finally, a big thank you to Karin Duarte for her time on the
Committee. She has a high level of other commitments and
cannot continue in her role but will offer her assistance to
WASA in future events.
Thank you Karin.
With my best wishes
Roger
Reading, President.

I grew up
in a small Texas town between Houston and Galveston. My
parents converted a barn into a multipurpose playhouse for me
and my four siblings on our property. There are so many
memories of hours of painting and drawing with what seemed to
be endless art supplies. At school my favourite subject
was ART. So when I graduated from high school, my parents were
proud of my decision to pursue Art at Texas Tech University in
Lubbock, Texas. I loved my time there!
My Mom was a Perth girl, born and bred, so I had visited Perth
many times while growing up. A trip back to Perth in 1981
would change my life path entirely! While here, I fell in
love, and that was it - I wasn't going back to Texas
Tech. Excitedly, I applied to WAIT (now Curtin
University) to continue my degree in Perth. Unfortunately, I
was rejected after a rude interview with the Head of the Art
Department. I was crushed, and I allowed my Art journey
to end, then and there.
I stayed in Perth, finding work in the office and
administration/bookkeeping. I married my love, and we had two
beautiful children. Family, home and work were our
priorities.
Then in 1999, when my father passed away, it occurred to me
that my Dad did not enjoy my Art journey dream because of a
stranger at WAIT. So I started to plan and fuel my ART
journey again slowly.
For my 50th birthday in 2011, my wonderful husband built me a
small art studio at our home. What a sweetheart! In
2019 I gave up full-time work to expand my ART journey.
Unfortunately, a few health issues have slowed my momentum in
this journey, and relying on art is a healing notion.
Along the way, I have enjoyed the guidance and experiences gained
through Life Drawing sessions at Ian D'Souza's studio, the
Watercolour classes at Atwell Gallery, Pastels and Oils
Painting at Tresillian and the Fremantle Arts Centre, various
courses at Claremont School of Art and the valuable workshops
instructed by Andrew Tischler and Leon Holmes.
I love the human form and capturing likenesses, as well as
painting water. I really don't know what is a favourite as I
find all subjects a welcome challenge. My ART journey is
still evolving, and I have many works in progress to prove it.
I look forward to continuing to develop as an artist with a
personal aim of contentment.
"Being an artist
is
managing rejection
by not
confusing it with failure."

CONGRATULATIONS
ALICIA GOREY
WINNER
OF OPEN CATEGORY COSSACK ART AWARDS 2021
|
|
|
|

|
Alicia Gorey with her winning entry in the Open
Category Cossack Art Awards 2021. Alicia was presented with
the Award ($8.000) by the CEO or Rio Tinto.
Alicia has entered the Cossack Art Award for the last four years
and has received the People's Choice Award on two occasions.
Alicia was delighted to win the Open Category this year.
Alicia recommends other members of WASA enter this Award, as all
work is flown to Karratha free of charge, the sale rate is very
good. It is very important to attend the Opening Night as all
the local people make a wonderful celebration of the night.
"My painting method is always the same, learned from years of
working with D'Hange Yammanee, using umber to work out light and
dark values and then applying the colour. It was a delight to
paint."

SELECTED
FOR STAR PROGRAMME
ATWELL GALLERY
Roger Reading has been
selected to participate as Short Term Artist in Residence
(STAR) at the Atwell Gallery in Alfred Cove, a new initiate of
Melville Arts in the City of Melville. Roger wished to
participate in order to learn about this new initiative.
This programme allows the artist to use the Atwell Gallery Space
to 'make and create' , and hang artworks, display 3D
works and to sell works. The initiative gives artists the
opportunity to share artworks, processes and experiences with
other artists and visitors to the gallery. The aim is to
provide a warm and inspiring social experience for
artists. It offers the opportunity to network with other
people in the arts community and to promote the artist's
work. Free mentoring is also offered to participants.
The STAR programme is open from Monday 30th August to Thursday
23rd September. The cost is $10 per day and participants
can come for the full 25 days or any combination of them, as
booked.
It will every interesting to WASA members to hear how this

FOR THE ANIMALS
CHARITY EXHIBITION
INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE
For The
Animals is a Perth based conservation
charity that works to protect animals from illegal trafficking
and habitat destruction. They work with the U.S. based
Wildlife Alliance in one of the last intact forests left in
Asia, the Southern Cardomom Mountains in Cambodia. For
further information about their amazing work, which includes
rescuing over 70,000 animals from the wildlife trade, please
look at the information online.
In the past, the Organisation has primarily funded its projects
in Cambodia by eco-tourism but this is no longer possible due
to the pandemic, so the Organisation has had to look at other
means of funding. A priority project is to fund a
community-based ranger programme that employs local people to
protect the area from hunting and logging.
Date:
Thursday 18th
November 2021
Venue:
Fridays Studio at 13 Old Aberdeen
Place WEST PERTH
Entry
Details:
Expressions of Interest from artists to MeredithSonder-Sorensen.
Meredith will send out entry forms and she can be
contacted on 0438119170.
The subject of the exhibition is open and not just relating to
animals. We have been lucky enough to form an association with
Jan Omeara, the wire artist, who will be doing a life-size
piece of the baby elephant who was rescued by the Organisation
and given a foot prosthesis.
The majority of pieces will be put onto an online gallery for
sale, prior to the exhibition, and some of the work of more
well-known artists will be auctioned on the night. Each
piece will have a reserve price and the charity will retain 30%
commission on all pieces sold unless the artist wishes to make
a donation.
We are expecting between 200 and 250 people on the night of the
exhibition and the event and online gallery will be advertised
with its overseas affiliates.
If anyone is interested in volunteering to help with the
exhibition, they would be extremely welcome, as there are very
few helpers who are experienced in running an art exhibition.
