Migara Ramanayake is a Sri Lankan-born artist and master of figure drawing and portraiture, celebrated for his ability to capture the human form with precision and artistic depth. With a firm and formal foundation in traditional drawing methods, Migara holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. He has continued to refine his skills, developing a practice that bridges classical techniques and contemporary artistic exploration.
Through his drawing, Migara uses art to communicate complex concepts of stories, fate, and time. His work blends fiction and reality, inviting viewers to question notions of good and bad, fate, and the nature of reality itself. Using pencils and charcoal, Migara’s portraits are marked by meticulous attention to light, shadow, and proportion, creating compelling works that resonate with emotional and structural clarity.
In addition to his professional practice, Migara teaches at the Canning Art Centre and the South Perth Learning Centre and offers private tuition at his studio located at Goolugatup Heathcote Gallery and Museum in Applecross. His teaching focuses on helping students of all levels develop a deep understanding of form, structure, and tonal rendering, inspiring them to push the boundaries of their creativity.
During this portrait demonstration for the Western Australian Arts Society, Migara will share his expertise in capturing the human figure, guiding participants through techniques that blend technical precision with conceptual depth.
