Jennifer Hughes – Artist Statement

Throughout my life, I have found much happiness through creativity and art. While a diversion to career and family life took over my attention, in recent years I’ve dived back into artistic pursuits.

Eager to learn and grow, I enjoy setting myself challenges to explore new subjects and mediums. I was particularly excited to try my hand at a seascape on a recycled surfboard, which later inspired a commissioned piece.

Initially gravitating towards watercolours, incredible fine artist and educator, Yana Vodesil-Baruffi, introduced me to the joys of oil paints. I was drawn towards the rich, deep colours and exploring how they blend and flow together on the canvas.

My early influences have come from rural landscapes and wildlife, born from my 15 years in outback Broome and travels around Australia.

As a member of the Watercolour Society of WA, I was pleased to be selected as a finalist in the International Watercolour Exhibition in Nadeshiko Japan in 2023. Shortly after I was thrilled to be recognised with the President’s Encouragement Award from the WA Society of Art.

After much encouragement from friends and family, I have been fortunate to sell a number of commissioned artworks, as well as pieces in exhibitions across Perth and Karratha.

I have always enjoyed the process of creating and discovering my final artwork. Over the past year, I started sharing my progress through Facebook where I have been lucky enough to connect with other great appreciators of the artistic journey.
