Kim Cotteral – Artist of the Month – October 2026

Kim Cottrell is an emerging glass artist, embracing kiln-formed glass in early 2023.

He originally trained as a photographer, both in the commercial and domestic fields, and he is using the art knowledge attained during his photography Diploma course to create vessels, sculptures and forms that engage with the viewer and push the boundaries of glass fusing and kiln forming.

Kim is currently experimenting with different processes such as solid casting, mokume gane, gelled glass, strip construction in a dammed mould form, reactive glass, kiln pressing, hard edge glass construction and stack construction utilising Hxtal-1.

Recently he has started exploring different ways of displaying glass collections by utilising aluminium or copper as the base to mount the glass and then presenting this in a frame, ready to hang.

He finds great joy in making glass art and can lose himself in designing and assembling the glass to go in the kiln, and then the excitement when the firing is completed to see how the heat has transformed the glass.

Kim also incorporates recycled timber, aluminium and stainless steel as display mounts for his glass sculptures.

Inspiration from artists such as Piet Mondrian, Andy Warhol and Claude Monet can be seen in some of the vessels and sculptures created.
