Marian was born and raised on the tiny island of Trinidad (Trinidad and Tobago) in the Caribbean. Trinidad is very like Australia in that it was settled by immigrants from many countries and is very multicultural. Her family’s heritage is a mix of British, French, Spanish and German, and her Spanish ancestors were some of the first European inhabitants of Trinidad in the 1600s.
In 1976 she married her Trinidadian husband, and ten years later they immigrated to Australia. Despite the wonderful childhood they both experienced growing up in their tropical island homeland, things had sadly started to go in a direction they did not care for. They decided it would be more beneficial to provide their kids with the opportunities offered by Australia. Therefore, they moved to Perth with four children under the age of ten, and when they arrived, discovered number five was on the way. Welcome to Australia!

Needless to say, between the school and sporting activities of five children, full-time work and the demands of running a household of seven, there was not much time left over for creative pursuits. Despite that, she did find the time to indulge in quite a few craft ventures such as mosaics, dressmaking, Friendly Plastic jewellery making and the like. She even benefited financially from said pursuits.
Much later in life, with all her children grown, she started her own business in 2011. This gave her more time to indulge in activities she enjoyed. She often expressed a desire to try her hand at painting, and friends who painted would encourage her to ‘just come and paint with them’ and ‘pick it up on the fly’. Even though she was largely self-taught in everything she’d ever done creatively, for some reason she was quite determined that she would not start painting until she had proper training in the craft.

In 2020 she had a major health scare which prompted her distraught husband to spoil her for Christmas with Art lessons with Jana Vodesil. This was where she discovered her great love for oil painting. So much so, 18 months later she closed her business and retired to pursue that love. She now spends her days painting, playing golf and spending time with her husband. She is enjoying her retirement thoroughly.
